Former state Rep. Cary Allred is back, but not as a Republican. The Times-News reports that Allred is planning to run as a write-in candidate for commissioner in Alamance County. He left the N.C. House last summer following the infamous speeding-ticket incident and allegations of inappropriate behavior toward a House page. Here’s a recap.

Allred’s dispute with state Republican leadership began last year. He left office on June 1, 2009 after a series of events led to an investigation by the House Sergeant at Arms. The probe stemmed from alleged incidents on the House floor on April 27. Some fellow legislators and staff members reported that Allred had been speeding on the way to the House session that night, that he had been drinking before the session and that he behaved inappropriately toward a House page, who happened to be his neighbor and a longtime family friend. He was charged by the state Highway Patrol days after the incident with speeding 102 mph in a 65 zone on Interstate 40.

According to previously published Times-News stories, Allred admitted to having one alcoholic drink, a chelada, which is a mixture of beer, tomato juice and clam juice, before driving to the House session that night. He and the page said the embrace and peck on the cheek were innocent exchanges between neighbors.
