You noticed that at the time of the Revolution writers used a script that made the “S”s look like “F”s. (Probably a hang over from the Saxon influence on the English  language. German script used this as late as the 20th century.) 

It reminded me of an old Stan Freberg comedy routine where Ben Franklin is reading Jefferson’s draft of the Declaration of Independence.  Ben pronounces all of the words as if the “S”s were “F”s.  “Life, liberty and the perfuit of happineff”  Jefferson corrects him and tells Ben that this way of writing is very stylish.
