Billy Elliot, The Musical won eight Tony Awards last night – Dance, Billy Elliot, Dance!

Will Ferrell’s “You’re Welcome America. A Final Night with George W Bush” lost to Liza Minnelli’s “Liza’s at The Palace” for the Best Special Theatrical Event award. Thank goodness.

Hippies everywhere will be celebrating the Tony Award for best revival of a musical, as Hair beat out Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, and Pal Joey.

Finally, there is God of Carnage, which won the Tony Award for Best Play. Here is the description of the play:

Two ostensibly civilized married couples meet up to sort out a playground fight. The son of one couple (Jeff Daniels and Hope Davis) has broken two of the teeth of the son of another (James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden). At first diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses and the rum flows, huge tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving more than just their liberal principles in tatters.

They are “liberals” that abandon their “principles.” Funny how we celebrate the commonplace.
