Tryon Commissioner George Baker, who cast the lone vote against trying to rescind the last tax increase, wants to give the local ABC store a bailout.
Baker said the ABC board continues to make progress and actually made a profit last month, but he thinks it’s time for the town to step up and help.
Among expenses the commissioner would like to see picked up by taxpayers are the store’s $3000 audit fees and six months of water and garbage pickup bills. Baker wants to help the store because he claims it performs a great service for the community. Also, paying money now might help the store repay the $10,000 it owes the town. The store was temporarily shut down for auditing in 2012 after $3000 worth of spirits mysteriously evaporated.
The moral of the story is, it is impossible to sell liquor without government oversight.
