Many of the opinion that if we are going to have big government, one of the main things it should do is limit squabbles amongst its constituents. However, once again we see how the public hearing process causes people to appear to invent crises in order to get a smidgeon of government influence to shift the balance of power in their favor.

Buncombe County is reconsidering a former recommendation to squelch the proliferation of vacation rentals. According to those agin’ the rentals:

Some hoteliers among the crowd of more than 40 at Monday’s meeting said that short-term rentals are unfair competition, and neighborhood advocates said the rentals would bring unwanted traffic, noise and other problems.

“I find it hard to believe that you would limit property rights because of fear of competition (by) the hotel industry,” [Realtor Chip Craig] told the board. “That just doesn’t make sense to me.”
