Get ready, folks. The Herald-Sun reports Durham County commissioners have instructed County Manager Mike Ruffin to talk to local business leaders about putting a 1/4 cent transit tax on the ballot. Then on Wednesday there will be a meeting of the Transportation Advisory Committee to find out if Triangle county officials feel they can garner enough support within their counties to pass it. Bottom line: the fascination with regional rail continues among the elite in this area, but polling shows the public is far from sold. While the fascination with inflexible, astronomically expensive trains continues, the answer to our transportation issues rests with roads — including toll roads — and a flexible, robust bus system.
