WASHINGTON D.C. – Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (WA-05) issued the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 50, Unfunded Mandates Information and Transparency Act of 2015, which would require greater transparency of federal government costs associated with unfunded mandates.
“For far too long, people in Eastern Washington and their local governments have paid the price for the federal government’s excessive and out-of-control spending. Today I voted to change that. I voted to ensure that the federal government works for Eastern Washington. As part of America’s Opportunity Economy, I joined my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to approve a common-sense solution to reducing cost by improving transparency, awareness, and accountability in our federal agencies. I will continue my efforts to ensure government accountability and reform for Eastern Washington, and I will continue working to empower people, not Washington, D.C.”
This legislation works to increase transparency surrounding the costs of unfunded federal mandates. It places stricter and more clearly defined requirements for how and when federal agencies must disclose the cost of federal mandates, and ensures those impacted have the opportunity to weigh in on proposed mandates.
Additionally, the legislation equips Congress and the public with tools to determine the true costs of regulations.
