No comment necessary, just a few highlights from this morning’s Winston-Salem Journal editorial on light rail:

The prospect of light-rail service in the Triad is an idea that’s almost been talked to death, with critics saying it’s too expensive and there’s not enough interest. But as a study finally takes up the issue, we may well learn that the area can’t afford not to have light rail — even though getting it won’t be easy.

Gas prices will increase more in the generations to come. The cost of road repairs and construction will increase as well. So will congestion and pollution from cars.

If the Triad is to keep up with Charlotte and other urban areas, it must eventually have light rail. The time to start planning for it is now.

But selling the concept won’t be easy.

…..The Triad may not be ready for light rail today. But eventually, its economic survival may depend on it. Let’s proceed with the study.
