A man was shot last night on Watts Street in Durham trying to defend himself and the woman he was with from an armed robber:
The man was walking with a woman on the 500 block of Watts Street early this morning when a man armed with a gun approached them from behind, police said. The armed man ordered the man and woman to put their hands on their heads while he searched them.
A struggle over the gun took place soon after, and two shots were fired, police said. The man was shot in the abdomen, and the attempted robber fled, according to police.
Police said the gunman was limping when he fled and may have been shot.
The male victim was being treated at a local hospital. The woman did not suffer from any injuries, according to police.
The armed man was described as black, around 40 years old, 5 feet 11 inches tall and with a stocky build. He wore a gray shirt and dark jeans.
What good does it do to create a vibrant entertainment district like the Brightleaf Square area if the people who live in adjacent Trinity Park can’t walk there and get back home without being beset by armed robbers? Muggings have become as commonplace as Obama stickers in TP, and walking up to the James Joyce or the Federal for a drink is, literally, taking your life into your hands.
Will our timid Durham City Council and mayor even acknowledge what has been happening in Trinity Park over the past few months, or will political correctness continue to muffle their responses to these outrages?
After living in Durham for nearly 30 years, I think I already know the answer.
