The culture of victimhood and group think is on display at NC State in an interactive event called the Tunnel of Oppression . Here’s hoping that one day these students will begin to see themselves and think of themselves as the unique individuals they are, rather than focusing on group identity. And here’s hoping they one day realize that every person, regardless of race, gender, age, or religion, faces discrimination and/or unfairness at one time or another in their lives.

At the end of the tour, participants are encouraged to discuss the different cultures and perspectives they’ve witnessed and explore opportunities to address the problems presented. The tunnel is often shocking and disturbing to those who have never experienced blatant forms of discrimination or oppression, and there are exits from the tunnel for those who may find the experience difficult to complete.
