An American rider in his first Tour de France was among a successful four-rider breakaway yesterday, finishing second in the stage and putting himself in third place overall in the legendary bicycle race. What does The Associated Press do? They give him a one-line, almost parenthetical mention in their story.

Instead, AP talks about French “domination” of the stage, a “domination” exemplified by the two-foot win of Frenchman Samuel Dumoulin over the American, Will Frischkorn. (see photo below; that’s Frischkorn on the right). You would think the editors at AP would recognize this amazing story and would try to sell it to their home-country readers. Maybe 20 years ago, but not today in the “America is the Problem” era of journalism.
