As North Carolina joins others states in trying to figure out what real 21st century telecom should look like, unbundling of previously mandated package-deals needs to be a goal. As this story relates, there is simply no technical reason to force customers to buy land-line telephone service as a condition for purchasing high-speed Internet service.

If Verizon and Qwest can do it, so can Bell South, Alltel, and other N.C. providers.
