What a shame that Chapel Hill police have to prepare the community like this in case UNC wins this weekend and/or Monday. Look for police to close down sections of Franklin and Columbia streets in case punks decide to turn a fun occasion into an excuse to vandalize and create havoc. From the Raleigh News & Observer, : (emphasis is mine).
Police are asking residents and business owners to remember some key information:
* There will be no parking starting at 3:30 p.m. in the 100 block of East Franklin Street, all of Henderson Street and North Columbia Street. Parking meters will be bagged. Cars parked in those areas after 7 p.m. will be towed.
* Businesses are asked to restrict the sale of Carolina blue paint; those selling alcohol are asked to serve alcoholic beverages in paper or plastic cups or cans to keep glass out of the area.
* If a business has removable signs or awnings, police recommend they be put away.
* Doors to rooftops should be secured to keep people off roofs.
* No alcoholic beverages will be allowed in the closed area, including the streets, sidewalks, parking lots and alleys within the area.
Why society tolerates this nonsense is a mystery. Sports is a wonderful thing for both participant and spectator. I wish more people held the view of Belmont Abbey College President Willilam Thierfelder, a recent guest on Carolina Journal Radio for a discussion of virtue in sports.
