From the Durham Herald Sun:

The call came at about 5:30 Sunday morning, bringing with it a moment as sweet as Maha Alattar has ever experienced.

It was her cousin calling from Tennessee, where her family was awake and celebrating. The words were simple: “They caught him!”

Alattar needed no more detail; she knew reflexively that the end had finally come for the tyrant who ran her family from its native land, had her relatives killed and stole the dignity of a generation of Iraqis. The end had come for Saddam Hussein.

Alattar is a UNC neurologist, a naturalized American born in Iraq and schooled in the United States. …

… But the future is decidedly brighter today than it has been in decades, Alattar believes. Iraqis are an educated people, she said, and the nation will be able to govern itself soon enough.

“You don’t need much to learn democracy,” she said. “You just have to embrace it.”
