The Chronicle of Higher Education (subscriber site) announced today that UNC-CH’s spring commencement speaker will be “The Rev. Peter J. Gomes, a professor of Christian morals at Harvard University.” If that sounds to you like “professor of henhouse guarding at Fox U.,” read on.

Who is Peter J. Gomes? Well, let him describe himself: “I am a Christian who happens as well to be gay.” Which is why a professor of “Christian morals” at Harvard teaches an “anti-literalist view of Scripture,” “has always maintained a weak view of Scripture as being the authoritative Word of God,” and teaches that homosexuality “is not a sin” ? and no doubt why UNC-CH, which cannot tolerate the idea of Christians getting together and meeting on campus but can tolerate the fact that the Office of Civil Rights found one of its instructors guilty of sexual and racial harassment and discrimination against a “white, heterosexual, [C]hristian male,” would bring him in to deliver its final word to departing seniors.
