UNC-G is one of the universities that has attempted to damp down freedom of expression by students through the unseemly device of having designated free speech zones where they could speak their minds without fear of reprisal from authorities lest they should utter anything that might be offensive to anyone else. Last year, two students were brought up on disciplinary charges for having violated the policy by protesting the existence of the speech zones outside the speech zones.

According to this article in the Greensboro News and Record, the university has decided to substantially change the policy. If the students had taken the case into federal court, the result was clear — UNCG would have lost readily under precedents established in similar cases.
