This week, a press conference
to announce the results of a Pope Center-commissioned study of UNC
governance was attended by WB 22, News14 Carolina, the Raleigh News & Observer,
and the North Carolina News Network. However, numerous other papers
around the state ran with the story when the Associated Press
distributed the N&O piece. Several TV stations also picked
up the print story. Results of the study even made news in other
states. WVEC in Hampton Roads, Virginia aired a piece, as did the
Myrtle Beach Sun-News and USA Today. The report, produced by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, recommends two
key changes to the governance of the UNC System. First, the study
concluded, the governor, not the General Assembly, should appoint
members of the Board of Governors. And second, the board’s size should
be substantially reduced from 32 to 15 members. Other recommendations
were also made in “Governance in the Public Interest: A Case Study of the University of North Carolina system.”
