I read an interesting passage in The Daily Tar Heel:

[Chancellor] Moeser told his group that if the assignment had any lasting impression, he hopes it will help people put a face on the working class. “I think it is important for all of us to start seeing these people as human beings.”

Yes, it’s rather presumptive of Moeser to say that, but I’m sure he meant it well, and that’s not the point. What Moeser said reminded me of a quotation from his predecessor, Michael Hooker:

… I call it the “reverse Robin Hood scheme” but nobody seems to listen. Though exact data is difficult to obtain, we believe that the average family income at Chapel Hill is a little more than twice the average family income of the state. I find it ethically objectionable to have the working class of North Carolina subsidizing the education of the upper middle class.
