Like I pointed out in a comment here, terming a Power Point of the obvious a “report” is a misnomer, but that is the least of the problems with the false dichotomy now being debated.

The choice for UNCC is not between no football and football with much higher student fees. The choice is between higher student fees without football and even higher student fees with football. This is because UNCC athletics as they currently exist are not sustainable. Even the dopey Power Point kept bringing up “strengthening” the men’s basketball program. Wonder why?

Joining the A10 was a horrible mistake. The question is how to fix that. Football might. The trouble is you have to find about $100m. for the capital costs and probably $8 to $10m. a year in student fee subsidy to make it work.

The long term football-less alternatives? UNCC downshifts and rejoins its long-lost hyphen brothers like UNC-Asheville and UNC-Greensboro, dropping all pretensions to being the big time University of Charlotte — and how likely is that? — or UNCC winds up like Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond. VCU’s tuition and fees for in-state students is about $1000 more per semester. VCU athletics are even more dependent on student fees than UNCC’s.

VCU does not have football either.
