One final wave off attempt for Judy Rose: Do not dally with Mike Minter. He is not qualified to be UNCC’s first football head coach. You need someone with extensive college experience — ideally both Div. I and I-AA.
This is no knock on Minter, he seems a decent guy and was a good pro. But for comparison, take a look at the coaching resume of fellow Cornhusker Turner Gill, who was named HC at Kansas back in December.
Gill played QB a couple years in the CFL. In 1989, Gill goes back to Nebraska as a graduate assistant coach. Then onto North Texas and then SMU for a year each. In 1992 Gill comes back to Nebraska to coach quarterbacks from 1992-2003 and wide receivers in 2004. The Cornhuskers earned three national titles in that span.
In 2005 Gill went to the NFL. The Green Bay Packers hire Gill to be their director of player development and help coach receivers. By the end of year Gill gets his first head coaching job — the University at Buffalo, widely seen as one of the worst programs in the nation. Gill turns the program around and becomes one of the most sought after hires in the country.
UNCC should try to find the 2005 Turner Gill, not the 2010 Mike Minter.
