John, I’m having trouble with my charlotte.com account. Does any one ask the question why the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools are spending six figures to recruit more students which will require even more funding to serve?

Seems to me as a taxpayer that if other families have opted to fund their own educational process, that relieves me of the burden. And that was the gist of Gov. Easley’s response (retort?) to the private/home school tax credit question in the second gubernatorial debate — why spend money (or forego tax collection, which means the same to some people), pursuing students and families who are already outside the system and off the budget?

Is it another bit of evidence that the state should be encouraging the non-public education options, rather than spending money to compete with them? This is like the government trying to go head to head with the Red Cross and Salvation Army for relief work, rather than welcoming the help and spending the resources where no volunteers are forthcoming.

Good questions for spending authorities in Charlotte, or maybe Raleigh, to ask.
