In case you have not heard, before Governor McCrory chose Tony Tata to lead the Department of Transportation, he was the superintendent of the Wake County Public School System.

According to a report released by the NC Department of Public Instruction this morning, Wake County had 150 fewer dropouts between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 school year, despite a robust enrollment increase.  That represented a 10.8 percent decrease in dropouts from year to year.  The district’s rate fell from 3.25 percent to 2.83 percent.

You can criticize General Tata for many things.  But under his watch, the district raised student achievement.  Let’s hope that he achieves comparable gains, whatever those may be, in his new endeavor.
