The more complicated laws are, the more they create unintended consequences. Obamacare is certainly one of the most complicated laws ever passed (here or anywhere in the galaxy) and we’re finding out about many of its consequences that weren’t (apparently) intended. Government intervention always creates bad incentives. Back in 1995, Richard Epstein wrote a superb book entitled Simple Rules for a Complex World. Simple rules are almost always better, but authoritarians like Obama insist on dragging us into ever more complex regulatory schemes.
