What the hell is going on? The Uptown paper of record citing unnamed sources reports that Uptown utility infielder Mac Everett will be the “interim” head of the United Way before the United Way board has officially voted to oust CEO Gloria Pace King. Her attorney, Bill Diehl, will relish making the Uptown crowd squirm and then pay up the millions due King.

Nothing in this mess adds up. There needs to be a full and totally visible audit of the local United Way operation, not to mention a full account of how King came to be offered the massive compensation package that the board suddenly finds too rich. Who — exactly — drew up the package? Why?

For years it has been an open secret that Charlotte’s corporate titans virtually mandate that employees contribute to the United Way annual campaign. Did King object to that practice? Demand a bigger cut of the take? Like I said, nothing makes sense in this deal.

Update: Ha! Matt Drudge is linking to our United Way soap opera behind an “outrage” tag. Right between a new Russian Cold War story and an Iranian SITREP. The Uptown crowd is gonna love that — world class, baby!
