Believe it or not, that’s the assertion of a letter to the editor published in today’s Chapel Hill Herald. Andrew Courtwright of Durham writes, in part, about his view of the role of UNC-Chapel Hill:

“Universities are not in the business of providing a neutral “marketplace of ideas.” Just as in the real market, we exclude some goods, so should we in the classroom. The primary role of the university is to provide an environment in which all opinions and views can be discussed fairly so long as they are worthy of consideration.”

I’d like to see a list of views Mr. Courtwright deems “worthy of consideration” in exchange for our tax dollars that pay for our state’s public higher education system. No doubt those who share Mr. Courtwright’s perspective would likely advocate a government body to figure it all out for us.
