A few years ago, Peter McPherson, the president of Michigan State University wrote (this is close if not exact), “I’ve been in big business and I’ve been in the federal government, but I’ve never seen any place where the urge to spend money is greater than in higher education.”

Apropos of that, check out Mike Adams’ latest column here. His school, UNC-Wilmington has just brought on board a new chancellor and decided to throw a celebration that included a speech by George Mitchell, former Democratic majority leader in the Senate, for which he was paid a cool $40 grand.

If it was utterly essential to have a speech from a former politician who could be counter on to say nice, boosterish things about UNCW, couldn’t they have found someone close at home who would have done it for a small fraction of 40 grand?

You’ll also be glad to read about various other ways that your tax dollars are being spent at UNCW.
