The WRAL news story has been updated to reflect that “Health officials are concerned that an employee cleaning at Oak Grove Elementary School in Durham, Jesse McCrimon, might have been exposed to mercury and might have taken it to the university during his overnight shift at Walter Royal Davis Library.”

Later the story explains the dangers of mercury:

Mercury is highly toxic in vapor form and slightly toxic in liquid form. Touching, ingesting or inhaling can contaminate a person. The element can cause brain and liver damage and can be very harmful to a developing fetus.

I haven’t confirmed rumors that Planned Parenthood, “NARAL” Pro-Choice America, Sen. Hillary Clinton et al. plan to rally in support of mercury rights on the slogan that it should be “Safe, Legal and Rare.”
