Thanksgiving morning brought more than the prospect of food, family, and football to Raleigh News & Observer readers. They were also treated to a front-page story about the Pope Center — part of continuing coverage of the controversy over the possible creation of a Western Civilization program at UNC-Chapel Hill, funded by the John William Pope Foundation. The piece led with a description of Jon Sanders’ “Course of the Month,” a feature on the Pope Center site and in Carolina Journal that has some faculty and students upset for its criticism of courses such as “Canine Cultural Studies.” The story was accompanied by brief profiles of the Pope Foundation and the Pope Center, and other examples of Sanders’ “Course of the Month” writings.
