Fresh from his election victory, Gov. Mike Easley wasted no time continuing the practice of handing out “incentives” to big business under the guise of bringing jobs to the state. Despite JLF’s information campaign, on Thursday the General Assembly approved at least $242 million for Dell Inc. to build a plant in the Triad at a projected cost of more than $200,000 per job. Before the vote, Roy Cordato and Don Carrington spoke to the Republican Senate caucus. Cordato discussed and distributed JLF’s latest Spotlight report, which details why targeted tax breaks don’t increase job creation. Carrington talked with senators about the proper role of government. John Hood’s online Daily Journal on the uncertain legality of the tax credits was also provided to legislators. Chad Adams joined Cordato and Carrington for the daylong communication effort. To read the Spotlight, visit www.johnlocke.org.
