Ah, now we see what city of Charlotte planners intend for the $12m. in “extra” money raised by the sale of the city-owned land around the NASCAR Hall of Fame site. Use it help fund a massive re-development scheme that will leap — finally! — 277 to tie together Uptown and South End.
A “highway cap” would cover up a swath of 277 and provide more buildable space for some low-intensity uses while achieving the long-sought goal of physical marching development across 277 from Uptown. To Charlotte’s planners this the Holy Grail. Better still they can pitch it to city council as “free” thanks to the money from the real estate sale, which could be used for absolutely anything council desires. Roads, police, parks.
But we already know Charlotte city council loves re-development schemes.
