News14 has a fascinating little insta-poll asking “Do you feel safe in Uptown?”

Only 28 percent of clickers say “Yes,” another 32 percent say only during the day, and the balance, 40 percent, say “No.” Now that is surprising result. I would’ve thought the “Yes” number would be much higher, but maybe that is because I put myself in that category.

The key to staying safe is not so much where you are out, but when. Most places become decidedly more sketchy after 12 am and/or with very large crowds. Uptown does have parking decks which are always potential property crime breeders, but heightened awareness and common sense can deflate that threat. Then there is the Willie Sutton-effect: Commerical activity attracts criminals.

But for me, Uptown does not seem any less safe than other similar places.
