Two flights a day on 50-seat regional jets to Michigan’s second-largest market begin after Labor Day. Grand Rapids will also be getting two flights a day to Philadelphia.
Quick analysis: Grand Rapids is the largest market within 1,000 miles without nonstops to Charlotte, so this announcement doesn’t come as a surprise. The interesting aspect is that this is only two 50-seaters a day. This market needs to do well and see additional capacity added over time or it will be hard to make the case for additional service to the Midwest, as any possible additional destinations are smaller — often substantially so — and also usually further away.
Update: Technically, this is a resumption of service, as US Airways has offered Charlotte – Grand Rapids flights before. The airline flew the route for a time back in the mid-1999s.
