I speculated last week about who would take on Greensboro Mayor Robbie Perkins in the November election given his complicated personal life. The N&R reports at-large City Council member Nancy Vaughan will mount a challenge:

Vaughan said she recently has been approached by residents who asked her to run for mayor and offered financial support. She declined to say who they are.

..Vaughan has been considering a mayoral bid since last year, but she only decided for certain last week.

“I really think I can set a good direction for the city and for the people of Greensboro,” Vaughan said Saturday. “I have been very active the last two years. We have made a lot of important strides in the right direction.”

Vaughan told the N&R she will not make Perkins’ personal life an issue in the campaign. She won’t have to –the 5-10 percent of voters who actually care about city politics certainly will know about Perkins’ problems.

Local blogger George Hartzman has announced he will run for mayor, and the N&R reports that twice-unsuccessful City Council candidate Cyndy Hayworth said she “also has been asked to run for mayor by residents,” but has not yet made a decision.
