Timothy Silver and Judkin Browning, of Appalachian State University, are going to write a book about the Civil War with a man-versus-nature theme. The professors are going to write about the role of pestilence, diseases carried by invasive species, drought, and flooding.

Silver said that Union and Confederate soldiers accused each side of releasing diseased horses in an effort to infect their enemy’s herds.
