Voters across the state will be deciding whether to give their county commissioners the right to impose new sales or transfer taxes. These local option taxes are often presented to voters as simply the choice between the option or options on the ballot and higher property tax rates.

There are at least two more options available, however. One is for the county commissioners to start make wise decisions and paying for needs with the first dollar. Come back when you’ve stopped laughing.

OK. Voters can also the ultimate local option – voluntary contributions. Every county and school district in the state will gladly take your tax-deductible contribution. Whether they want more open space, teachers, dog parks, or convention centers, taxpayers can put up or shut up about the need for more money in local governments.
