Eric Gorny is concerned that the Swannanoa Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad has changed their bylaws. The coup is standard fare these days: One faction obtains majority leadership and votes itself greater staying power.

Gorny preferred the old method of electing board members in general public elections. Now, seated members may be re-elected by getting another board member to nominate them and a simple majority of the board to approve. Should a member not wish to be reappointed, a committee of one firefighter and one board member will hold up a nominee for approval by a simple majority of the board.

Gorny is concerned about oversight. The fire department recently issued debt to pay for a three-story ladder truck and a huge tanker. Gorny said the only three-story building he ever knew of in Swannanoa burned to the ground. The tanker, nicknamed “Squadzilla,” is among the largest in the state.

On the bright side, civilization is evolving. In the old days, rather than modifying bylaws, intriguing people would resort to murder.
