Pretty incredible statement from Winston-Salem City Council member Wanda Merschel regarding the city’s proposed budget, which more than likely will include a tax increase:

Merschel also said she was worried about the effect on public safety if the council continued to cut services as a way to save money.

Police response times are already projected to be slower next year, according to the city’s budget document.

Merschel said she did not want the city to inadvertently put residents at risk.

“We’ve looked under every rock for the past three years,” she said. “We’ve got to have a conversation about a tax increase.”

After several years of observing local politics, it seems to me that when officials go looking under rocks for extra cash, they find it, especially when it’s for pet projects like baseball stadiums, aquatic centers and economic incentives.
