Winston-Salem City Council members continue to haggle over City Manager Lee Garrity’s proposed budget, which would raise taxes on W-S citizens.

The sticking point—as reported earlier— is the city’s transportation authority budget, which is running a deficit that has been projected to grow to $2 million by 2020. Robert clark–the council’s lone conservative member–weighs in (emphasis mine):

Pointing to a cost of $71.12 per ride for each person taking Route 100, Clark said that it would be cheaper to “buy that person a car and give them insurance” than to keep paying for the route.

“I have a very simple philosophy,” Clark said. “The purpose of the bus is to transport people. If we have a route that is virtually unused … (we should) put the buses where the people want them.”

…and believe you me the majority of residents would rather have the car and the insurance instead of riding the bus, contrary to what Clark’s liberal fellow council members might think…..
