The City of Winston-Salem will use eminent domain to condemn Davis Garage, the downtown auto repair shop housed in an old train depot.

The city wants the property to use federal grant money to turn it back into a train depot that would serve proposed high-speed rail lines running through Winston-Salem.

Owner Harvey Davis will more than likely file suit. Meanwhile, I suggested last week that maybe they were catching on out in California. Perhaps I spoke to soon —- look at the problems the proposed high-speed rail line south of San Francisco are causing.

What I find ironic is supporters of high-speed rail are —-I’ll go out on a limb here —- opponents of so-called ‘urban sprawl,’ yet a major concern with the rail line is the valuable farm land that will be ‘gobbled up.’

Update: A blog dedicated to stopping high-speed rail in California, via Antiplanner. Worth checking on as leaders here in N.C. seem intent on following that track.
