The finalists for Winston-Salem police chief will meet with the public tonight:

The internal candidates are Capt. Alonzo Thompson and Assistant Chief Kevin Leonard. Thompson oversees vice and narcotics detectives. Leonard is assigned to Chief Pat Norris’ office and oversees recruiting, policy changes and the evidence section.

The outside candidates are Alan Dreher, the assistant chief of the Atlanta Police Department, and Scott Cunningham, the former police chief of Cary.

One thing I’ve noticed in the Journal’s coverage of the search for a new police chief is the emphasis on Risk Management Associates’ report on the police department, which

came in the wake of the city’s admission last year that poor police work played a major part in the wrongful conviction of Darryl Hunt for the 1984 murder of Deborah Sykes…..

The Risk Management report found that, in several cases, the department hadn’t follow through on needed reforms recommended in a city review of the Sykes case and that police supervisors were not holding detectives accountable for deadlines.
