Mitt Romney defended the traditional American “you’re on your own” (YOYO) ethic as the left try to portray it versus a “we’re all in it together” (WAIT) ethic they prefer.
YOYO makes it seem that your fortunes will go up and down through no fault of your own, so government needs to help. The second describes what we’ll end up doing if we let the government help like they want. Russians and Poles WAITed hours for bread and toilet paper. Canadians wait for optional surgeries and cancer screenings.
We may be in it together, but the best way to help each other is voluntarily through charity or market-based transactions. When was the last time somebody in government said “thank you” for paying your taxes on time? When was the last time you said “thank you” to the tax collector? And yet this happens almost every time you buy or sell something on your own.
