The Wake County school board is considering using assignment policies and other initiatives to address resegregation in the school system.
For years, the members of the school board have refused to return to the strategy of assigning students to create “healthy schools,” that is, schools that do not exceed a certain percentage of low-income students. That busing strategy was eliminated when a wave of Republican-supported school board members won a majority in 2009.
Interestingly, the article does not mention charter schools. District enrollment is stagnant, and more Wake County parents are choosing to send their children to charter schools than ever before. Assignment policies that alienate or inconvenience families may accelerate the outflow of students from the district to charters, as well as private and home schools.
