Yesterday I took a look at the Wake County Public School System’s website.  Specifically, I looked at the Winter Weather Make-Up Days page.  Because of all the snow and ice over the past few weeks, kids have missed a lot of school, and school systems all over the state are trying to figure out how to cram in the make-up time between now and the end of the year, with not a lot of options available.

Wake County has decided to make up three of those days over spring break, which will cause a problem for some parents who have already made plans for their kids that week.  And Wake County acknowledges that in the FAQs section of that page.

Thank you, Wake County!  Thank you for acknowledging that parents can be trusted to make the best decisions for their families.  That may mean rescheduling spring break activities.  It may mean missing school and making up the work.  Parents are best placed to make decisions for their families and to take responsibility for their children’s education.  That means choosing which commitments take priority and figuring out how to make up anything that their kids may miss.  Parents are up to that.

Now, if we could just trust parents similarly with choosing their children’s schools in the first place…
