A few days ago, WTVD ran a story about a mother filing a due process complaint against the Wake County Schools.  The district assigned her Down syndrome daughter to a different school so that she could be in a classroom with other disabled students.  The mother alleges that the new educational environment was harmful for her child and ultimately violated her rights under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Apparently, she is not alone.

A number of parents who commented on the story had a similar experience.  But rather than trying to fight the school district, they chose to home school their children.

On a similar note, I wonder how many other Wake County families chose to apply for a special needs voucher after failing to receive appropriate accommodations for their children.
