Wake County Schools Superintendent Del Burns made a surprise annoucement that he will resign as leader of the state?s largest public school system at the end of June.

Burns said he was resigning because of ?personal and obligatory considerations.? There?s been speculation that he might leave since a new school board majority took office in December that?s pledged to make major changes in the school district.

?It is clear to me that I cannot, in all good conscience, continue to serve as superintendent,? Burns said. Burns said he would not at this time elaborate on why he?s leaving.

School board members said they didn?t know the news was coming. School board chairman Ron Margiotta called a brief recess after the announcement was made.

?I was surprised, I thought we had a good relationship,? Margiotta said.

Burns has drven a bumpy road since four new conservative school board members were sworn in Dec. 1.
