John Grogan, the suburban columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer,
is considered a hoe-hum columnist whose writing and Ozzie-and-Harriet
home life make his journalistic colleagues roll their eyes. They call
him Captain Obvious for his take on suburban life and the lives of
ordinary people. In fact, they don’t think he’s a very good writer at
all.

Imagine their chagrin to find that this week his book
about life with his Labrador retriever, Marley, is number one on most
best-seller lists
. How can that be? What’s the deal?

Just as journalists don’t “get” why Wal-Mart and NASCAR are so popular, they don’t get why Marley and Me has made Grogan a millionaire.
