The Senate doesn’t look
like it will pass spending legislation this year for the war
effort.  Many Democrats say they only will support funding if it
is tied to the withdrawal of troops.

Today, the Senate Democrats
failed to get their appropriations bill (with troop withdrawal strings
attached) enacted (53-45 vote–it needed 60 for it to defeat a
filibuster).  The Republican bill, without strings attached,
failed 45-53.

Here is the Senate vote
on the Democratic bill (it technically is a motion for cloture–a vote
for it indicates support for the bill and a vote against indicates
opposition to the bill).

The 53 Yeas included 48 Democrats, 4 Republicans (Collins, Hagel, Smith, Snowe) and an Independent (Sanders).

The 45 Nays included 43 Republicans, 1 Democrat (Dodd) and an Independent (Lieberman)

Not Voting: Lott (R-MS) and McCain (R-AZ)

Both North Carolina senators, Senator Burr and Senator Dole voted against the motion.
