Boone and Watauga County continue to fight over who should appoint residents of the ETJ to the Boone Area Planning Commission and the Boone Board of Adjustment. When the Boone Town Council recently appointed two persons who didn’t reside in the ETJ, the county commissioners used their statutorily-granted authority to reject the appointments. In retaliation, the town council changed its ordinance to limit the amount of say the county has in the appointments. In turn, commission Chair Nathan Miller asked county staff to prepare a report on ways the county can capture a larger apportionment of sales tax revenue at the town’s expense. Commissioner Vince Gable wanted to sue the town, but Attorney Four Eggers recommended conserving taxpayer dollars.
