The John Locke Foundation is collecting some credit for Watauga County voters’ overwhelming rejection this week of a proposed local sales-tax increase. A Winston-Salem Journal article previewing Tuesday’s sales-tax referendum quoted Joseph Coletti, Director of Health and Fiscal Policy Studies. Coletti, Director of Education Studies Terry Stoops, and Director of Research and Local Government Studies Michael Sanera had collaborated on an August Regional Brief questioning Watauga’s need for additional sales-tax revenue. When voters rejected the referendum Tuesday, the Winston-Salem Journal discussed the John Locke Foundation’s role in the debate. Charlotte Observer “Naked City” blogger Mary Newsom also assigned JLF some credit for the referendum’s result. The Lincoln Tribune published Carolina Journal Associate Editor David Bass‘ exclusive article recapping the vote. Meanwhile, in other news related to local sales-tax campaigns, a High Point Enterprise article this week highlighted JLF opposition to Guilford County’s pursuit of a local sales-tax hike in 2008.
