Some time ago, the Watauga County TDA rejected a $75,000 grant for canoe and kayak launches and other recreational amenities. They were wary of their ability to afford the $18,750 match and recurring maintenance costs. Then, an organization called Green Valley Community Park offered to have the grant transferred to them for the purpose of constructing the amenities. The TDA entertained the proposal, but turned it down because the drafted contract still obligated them to too much. Now, another organization, High Country Pathways, will try to take responsibility for managing the grant and upgrading the parks.
